Dear History Student:
This is an open invitation for students who may be eligible for induction into Phi Alpha Theta, the international history honor society. To be inducted you must have completed at least twelve hours of credit in history and/or social science education courses, or sections of Honors College courses taught by Ball State University history department faculty. You must have completed these history/social science education courses with a GPA of at least 3.3, and additionally have an overall GPA of 3.0. Graduate students must have a 3.5 GPA in their degree program.
Phi Alpha Theta is a professional honorary society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. It seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.
If you are interested in membership, and fulfill the PAT initiation requirements, please respond to Dr. Kenneth Hall supplying your name, permanent mailing address, your local telephone contact, as well as your current GPA in your history/social science and overall coursework. We will have an on-campus initiation on Wednesday, April 8. To be initiated you will be charged a $50 national initiation fee, which provides you with lifetime membership as a Phi Alpha Theta honorary society member, and a one-year subscription to the PAT journal The Historian, which publishes quality scholarship submitted by student members, as also professorial reviews of recent historical studies books. Do not submit this initiation fee at this time; you will be requested to do so if you satisfy the initiation standards, which will be confirmed by provision of details on the initiation ceremony. YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE APRIL 8 INITIATION CEREMONY TO BE INDUCTED INTO PHI ALPHA THETA.
Please note that Phi Alpha Theta members may wear History Honor Cords at graduation – as these are available at an additional $15 charge.
If you have been previously initiated to Phi Alpha Theta, please indicate this by a return message, as this will provide an up-to-date contact (we’d like to get you involved in the April initiation).
Thank you for your attention to these matters.
Sincerely, Emily Rapoza (grad) and Julia Ricci (undergrad) History Majors
